India Pistons JV with Shaw Development sets up new plant in Hosur, TN

21st July 2022

The new plant will have an installed capacity of 240,000 units emission treatment components that can be scaled up to 350,000 units in the medium term.

India Pistons Ltd (IPL) which entered into a joint venture with Shaw Development a year ago has now established its first plant in Hosur, Karnataka. This will be the third plant of Florida-based Shaw Development outside the US and first in India.

The newly set up plant will have an installed capacity of 240,000 units emission treatment components that can be scaled up to 350,000 units in the medium term.

Under the joint venture, where IPL holds 51% , and Shaw 49%, the companies will manufacture diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) for heavy duty vehicles (commercial vehicles and off-road) and diesel engine manufacturers in compliance with BS-VI and equivalent exhaust emission norms. The partners will also offer other emission treatment components like sensors, modules, filters, caps, and other fluid management solutions to vehicle manufacturers in India.

According to Keith Luomala, Chairman & CEO of Shaw Development, India is the most strategic growth market for Shaw to develop highly reliable DEF and fluid management solutions.

"The domestic medium and heavy truck industry is tipped to reach a level of 500,000 units by 2024- 25 and through this joint venture we are largely focussed on the commercial vehicle market. Through this joint venture, we are betting on growing demand for emission control components and systems as regulations get increasingly stringent in India,” Luomala added.

The joint venture is aiming to produce 1 million units in the next three years in India, he added.

"This joint venture has come at the right time as India is moving very fast towards emission norms. And therefore, our product is going to be very relevant for the country in meeting the emission standards," A Krishnamoorthy, Chairman, Amalgamations Group, said.

IPL, which is a part of the USD 2 billion Amalgamations Group, is a specialist in pistons and allied components for the internal combustion engine. The company was looking at adding new product lines as its traditional businesses were also facing growing competition.
